PP Protection Board in Automotive Assembly Plants

PP Protection Board in Automotive Assembly Plants

An automotive plant floor takes more abuse than almost any other industrial surface: steel-wheeled trolleys, towed carts, pallet trucks and constant movement, on a floor that is usually a hard sealed concrete or an epoxy coating. Protecting it during works, or protecting a new coating while the line is re-fitted, is a load and abrasion problem rather than a cleanliness problem.

Wheels are the whole story

A plant trolley on small hard wheels concentrates load into a line contact and drags it across the floor continuously. Soft protection dishs under that load and the wheel still reaches the floor; thin sheet cuts. What works is a board stiff enough to spread the wheel load and with a wearing face hard enough not to be abraded away in a week. That is a honeycomb core with a dense skin, not a thicker soft product.

Downtime sets the terms

Line shutdowns are scheduled to the hour and protection has to go down and come up inside a window. That argues for a board that one person can carry and lay quickly, in a size that suits the aisle, and for delivery timed to the shutdown rather than to the order date. On this kind of job the logistics are the specification: if the pallet is not at the door when the line stops, nothing else matters.

Oil and cleaning

Plant floors get oil, and a protection board that absorbs it becomes a slip hazard and a disposal problem. Polypropylene does not absorb oil and it can be washed with a degreaser, which is the practical reason it gets specified over board products that soak. Ask what the cleaning regime is before choosing the face; a felt face holds oil and needs washing more often than a plain one, and in an oily area that is the wrong compromise.

Commercial terms that matter here

Plant work is usually repeat work: the same specification, reordered across shutdowns over years. That is worth structuring as a framework with agreed prices and a standing call-off arrangement rather than re-quoting each time. It also means consistency matters more than price – a board that performs the same way in year three as in year one is worth more than a cheaper one that varies.

Where not to use it

On a rough unfinished concrete plant floor with no coating and no finish to protect, there is nothing to protect. Protection in an automotive plant is for coated floors, new floors and areas being re-fitted, not for bare structural concrete.

What to order for a shutdown

One size, one grade, enough for the whole window plus ten per cent, delivered before the line stops rather than on the day. Quantities on shutdown work are estimated from the area, and the estimate is usually low because it ignores aisles and the route to the work face. Ask the supplier to sanity-check the number against the floor area before delivery.

Line-side work without stopping the line

Assembly plants do not stop for building work. Maintenance, retooling and installation happen on shutdowns, weekends and between shifts, which means protection goes down and comes up repeatedly rather than once. Reusability is not a nice-to-have here, it is the whole business case.

Panels have to be identifiable by area because a panel left in the wrong place at shift change becomes a housekeeping issue. They have to be light enough for one person to move quickly within a short window, and stiff enough for an AGV route or a tugger train to cross without deflecting. And they have to be non-marking on a sealed floor that will be photographed during a quality audit. We supply panels in several colours so line-side areas can be separated, and we can cut to the aisle widths that repeat across a plant – the cutting arithmetic is in cutting protection panels on site, waste and offcuts.

What we can do

We supply PP honeycomb protection board in a heavy grade for wheeled traffic, sized to the aisle and delivered against a shutdown schedule. Tell us the trolley types, the floor coating and the shutdown window, and we will quote a repeatable specification. Wheel load behaviour is set out in protection that survives pallet trucks and trolley wheels.
