PP Honeycomb Board for Pharmaceutical Projects

PP Honeycomb Board for Pharmaceutical Projects

Pharmaceutical work is different in kind rather than degree. The space is validated, everything entering it is controlled, and the paperwork is the hard part rather than the product. Protection board for a cleanroom project has to be specified as a controlled material and delivered with documentation, or it does not get past the door.

What gets controlled

Particle shedding, extractables and leachables, cleanability and static behaviour. A board that sheds fibres is a problem in a classified space; one that off-gasses is a problem in a sealed one; one that generates static is a problem where product or process is sensitive. Each is answerable with a document, and each has to be asked for at enquiry rather than discovered in validation.

Cleanable, smooth, sealed

In a classified area the board wants a smooth impermeable face that can be wiped with the approved agent, and sealed edges rather than open cells. A fibrous face has no place in a cleanroom – it holds particles by design, which is the opposite of what the space requires. This is the clearest case where the standard floor protection specification is simply wrong.

Static

Where the process is static-sensitive, an insulating polymer cover is a problem. An anti-static grade with a stated surface resistance is the specification, and it needs measuring in situ rather than accepting a datasheet value. Ask for the grade, and ask what the acceptable range is for the specific area.

Validation and lead time

Documentation goes through validation before installation, and that takes weeks. The practical advice is to submit the material pack as early as possible and to expect the product lead time to be irrelevant next to the approval lead time. This is the single most common reason cleanroom protection arrives late.

Where standard board is fine

In the non-classified areas of the same building – offices, warehousing, plant rooms – none of this applies and standard board is correct. Applying a cleanroom specification to an entire pharmaceutical facility is a large and unnecessary cost.

What goes in the material pack

Composition, extractables and leachables data, cleaning compatibility with the approved agents, static behaviour, and particle shedding performance. Five documents, and validation will ask for all of them. Submit early – the approval step is longer than manufacturing and it is the reason cleanroom protection arrives late more often than any other cause.

Cleanroom-adjacent work has different rules

In a pharmaceutical facility the constraint is not the floor finish, it is contamination control. Anything brought into a controlled area has to be wiped down, and anything that sheds particles is rejected. Cardboard and MDF are ruled out immediately. Corrugated PP sheet and PP honeycomb panel are accepted because they are non-shedding and can be wiped with the agents already in use.

The second constraint is that panels have to come out again through the same airlock, in the same condition. Panels that have been taped down with cloth tape leave residue that has to be removed with solvent, and the solvent is itself a problem in a controlled area. Use low-tack tape at the perimeter only, and specify sealed edges so nothing can be trapped inside the flutes. Where the work runs alongside production, the phasing issue in wall protection in pharmaceutical corridors is usually the harder half of the job.

What we can do

We supply PP honeycomb board with sealed edges and a smooth cleanable face, and can supply anti-static grades with stated surface resistance. Tell us the classification of the area and what the validation team needs, and we will provide the pack early. Corridor work in this sector is described in wall protection in pharmaceutical corridors.
