PP Protection Board for Cold Store and Chilled Areas

PP Protection Board for Cold Store and Chilled Areas

A cold store or chilled area is one of the few environments where the material behaviour of the protection itself becomes the main risk. Polypropylene stiffens and loses impact resistance as it gets cold, and any water that gets under a cover freezes, expands and lifts it. Both effects are manageable if they are planned for and expensive if they are not.

What cold does to the board

PP becomes stiffer and less forgiving below freezing. A board that flexes at ambient temperature will crack rather than bend if it is dropped or driven over at minus 20. Static load behaviour is largely unaffected, so protection under racking or standing loads is fine; it is impact and handling that change. Handle it more gently in a cold store and do not drop panels on a corner.

Freezing underneath

Water under a cover freezes, expands by roughly a ninth and jacks the cover up, leaving it tilted on ice. That is worse than no protection, because a tilted hard surface at sub-zero temperature is genuinely dangerous. The fix is drainage under the cover – an embossed face down and a gap at the low edge – and keeping the floor swept so there is less water to freeze in the first place.

Condensation on the way out

When a cold area warms up, or when warm air meets a cold floor, condensation forms under the cover. That water then refreezes the next time the temperature drops. Ventilation during any temperature transition, and lifting the cover during thaw-out, prevents the cycle.

What the floor is

Cold store floors are usually a hard industrial coating or a screed with a sealer, and they are subject to thermal cycling that cracks them independently of anything the works do. Protecting them is about load spreading under racking and pallet trucks, and about keeping the surface free of standing water that would freeze and lift the coating.

Buying notes

Cold store work is usually short, cold and unpleasant, which means crews work fast and protection gets treated roughly. Buy a grade that tolerates that and accept a shorter service life rather than specifying a premium board that gets broken anyway.

Handling at temperature

Crews work fast in a cold store and board gets dragged rather than carried. That is when panels crack, because cold PP is brittle under impact. Two rules worth giving at induction: lift rather than drag, and do not drop a panel on its corner. Both are cheap and both prevent the majority of cold-store panel loss.

Cold, condensation, and the daily temperature swing

A cold store is not simply a cold room – it is a room that cycles. Panels laid inside get condensation on the top surface every time the door opens or a defrost cycle runs, and that water sits on the panel rather than evaporating. Protection for this environment has to be impermeable, and it has to let water get away rather than pooling underfoot.

The studded face down handles this better than the felt face: the studs lift the panel off the slab so water drains across the floor instead of being trapped, and the surface stays grippy when wet. The felt face holds water and becomes a slip hazard in a freezer. The second issue is material behaviour – polypropylene gets stiffer and more brittle as it gets colder, so panels handled at -25C crack more easily at the edges. Bring panels in to condition before cutting them, and handle them less than you would at ambient temperature. Moisture behaviour is covered more generally in moisture trapping under floor protection panels.

What we can do

We supply PP honeycomb board with an embossed face for drainage in cold areas, and will say honestly what to expect from it at temperature. Tell us the operating temperature, whether it cycles and what the floor is, and we will specify accordingly. Freezing behaviour is covered in freezing weather and protection on external runs.
