Ordering PP Sheet: Cut-to-Size vs Full Sheets

Ordering PP Sheet: Cut-to-Size vs Full Sheets

Sheet comes either as full standard sheets that you cut yourself, or cut to the size you want. The per-square-metre price always favours full sheets and the total cost frequently does not, because offcuts and labour are real costs that nobody puts in the comparison.

What cut-to-size costs

A cutting charge, a set-up, and usually a higher price on the material because the supplier is handling it more. Expect a meaningful premium per square metre over buying full sheets.

What you get is sheets you can use immediately, no cutting step, no offcuts to store or dispose of, and a consistent edge. On a repeat item, the edge quality alone is often worth it – a factory-cut edge is cleaner and more consistent than one cut on site.

What full sheets cost

Less per square metre, plus labour, plus waste. The waste is the part people underestimate: cutting a standard sheet into smaller sizes usually leaves trim that is either too small to use or has to be stored.

And the labour is not trivial. Cutting sheet accurately, repeatedly, takes time and somewhere to do it, and a miscut sheet is scrap.

The comparison worth doing

Work out how many usable pieces you get from a full sheet and what the trim is worth. If you get four useful pieces and no usable trim, cut-to-size usually loses. If you get two and the rest is offcuts, cut-to-size often wins despite the premium.

Consumption is worth estimating properly first; the method is in estimating monthly sheet consumption.

When full sheets clearly win

When your sizes are close to a standard sheet, or when you use sheet for lots of different things and any offcut will find a use. A workshop that constantly needs odd pieces should buy full sheets and keep an offcut bin.

When cut-to-size clearly wins

Repeat items in a fixed size, where the cutting step is pure overhead. And any size that is awkward to cut accurately on site – large sheets, or tight tolerances.

Tolerances

A factory cut holds a tighter tolerance than a site cut, and if the sheet has to fit something, that matters more than price. Ask what tolerance the supplier holds and compare it with what you can achieve on site.

Minimums, lead time and offcut uses

Cut-to-size usually carries a minimum quantity and a slightly longer lead time than stock sheet, because it is a production order rather than a pick from stock. Worth knowing before you plan around it.

Then the offcuts from buying full: layer pads, protection board, stencils, shims, and anything else where a specific size is not required. A workshop with an offcut bin uses most of what it cuts; one without throws it away.

And the middle option

Some suppliers will cut to a small number of standard sizes and hold them, which gets you most of the convenience at less than bespoke cutting prices. Worth asking for if your sizes are stable.
