Evaluating a Second Source for Cable Reels

Evaluating a Second Source for Cable Reels

Single-sourcing cable reels is common and uncomfortable. Qualifying a second supplier is the obvious remedy and it is more work than most buyers expect – not because the product is complex but because the qualification is dimensional, and a reel that nearly fits is worse than one that does not.

Why bother

Price discipline, certainly – but the stronger argument is continuity. A single supplier with a problem, a resin shortage or a full order book stops your shipments. The cost of that is out of all proportion to the saving from concentrating volume.

The counter-argument is real too: splitting volume raises unit cost at both suppliers, dilutes the relationship, and doubles the qualification and administration work. For low volumes, single-sourcing with a good relationship is often the better decision.

What to qualify on

Dimensions first, and specifically the ones that interface with your equipment: bore diameter and its tolerance, flange diameter, traverse width, and the drive or arbor arrangement. A reel that fits your payout stand except for two millimetres of bore is scrap, and this is where second sources fail.

Send the drawing you already have rather than a sample, and ask the candidate supplier to confirm conformance in writing against each dimension. Whether reels fit standard stands is covered in do plastic reels fit metal payout stands.

Then balance and runout, which affect payout behaviour at speed. Then load capacity and flange impact resistance. Then the commercial terms.

How to qualify cheaply

Start with a small trial order at your own cost – enough to run on your equipment, not enough to matter financially. Run it at full speed, not gently. Then, if it passes, a single production order at maybe a fifth of your volume, held as a working alternative rather than bought routinely.

Tell both suppliers what you are doing. A incumbent who knows there is a qualified alternative behaves differently, and the improvement is often worth more than the second source itself.

What a second source really costs

The qualification process – somebody’s time for a couple of months. The higher unit cost of split volume. Duplicate documentation and packaging specifications. And, if the second supplier’s tooling is new, that cost.

Set against it: what a four-week interruption would cost you. For most operations running continuous production, that number settles the question.

When not to

Very low volumes. Highly customised designs where a second tool cannot be justified. And situations where your current supplier holds stock for you – that service is worth more than a small price difference and is difficult to replicate.

What to measure on the trial

Fit on your payout equipment at full speed, not by hand. Runout and balance behaviour. Flange condition after a full payout. And whether the reel sits correctly on the stand it will actually be used on – a reel that fits the stand in the workshop and not the one in the field is not qualified.

Run it at the speed you run at. Most reel problems appear at speed and not before.

And what to tell both suppliers

Be straightforward: you are qualifying a second source for continuity, and the incumbent remains primary. That is a normal commercial statement, it keeps the relationship honest, and in our experience the incumbent’s service improves – which is often worth more than the second source itself.

What we can do

We supply cable reels for FTTH drop cable and will confirm dimensional conformance in writing against your drawing before any order. Send us the specification – we will tell you whether we can meet it, including when we cannot and you should stay where you are.
