What Changes When You Double the Spool Order

What Changes When You Double the Spool Order

Volume breaks look like simple savings. They usually are, and they usually come with things that were not costed — in storage, in working capital, and in what happens to the specification over the life of a very large batch.

What genuinely gets cheaper

  • Unit price. Fixed setup spread further. Real, though it tapers.
  • Freight per unit. Consolidated shipments.
  • Administrative cost per order. One order instead of several.
  • Price protection. Larger orders are often price-fixed for longer.

What quietly gets worse

Storage. Spools are bulky. Double the order and you need somewhere to put twice as many, and storage tends to be the constraint that nobody modelled. This connects to everything in our storage yards article, including the parts about rotation.

Working capital. Cash tied up in packaging that depreciates slowly, or not at all. Sometimes fine, sometimes the objection that kills it — worth finding out before proposing it rather than after.

Obsolescence. A two-year supply commits you to two years of the current design. If anything downstream changes — product, process, machine — you are carrying stock that no longer fits.

Rotation discipline. This is the one that actually bites. With a large batch, older stock sits while newer stock gets used, unless somebody manages it deliberately. Given that PP properties drift slowly with UV exposure even in storage, as discussed in our article on service life, first-in-first-out is not academic.

What does not change

Unit inspection coverage — you still inspect a sample, and the sample represents twice as much. If a batch turns out to have an issue, you have discovered it across a much larger quantity.

Specification risk. Same risk per unit, applied to twice as many.

Damage exposure in storage. More stock sitting for longer means more handling events and more opportunity for exactly the kinds of damage described in our repair or retire article.

The taper

Unit price does not fall linearly forever. Setup costs amortise quickly and after that you are mostly looking at material and process time, neither of which scales down with volume beyond a point.

Practically, most of the available saving lands by a few hundred units, and going from there to a thousand buys much less than people expect. Ask for the actual curve rather than assuming a slope.

A better question than “how much for twice as many”

Ask what the supplier can do for a committed annual volume with scheduled releases. You get most of the pricing benefit without taking delivery of everything upfront — one order commitment, several shipments.

This also keeps stock fresh and lets you adjust quantities if your requirement changes, which over two years it probably will.

When large single orders do make sense

  • Where there is a known step change in demand coming
  • Where a specification is about to change and you want a final batch of the old one
  • Where there is genuine price exposure you are hedging
  • Where freight consolidation is dominant — long distance, expensive shipping

The thing to check before signing

Storage capacity and rotation discipline. Those two cause more regret than the saving is worth, and they are cheap to check in advance. A bulk order sitting outside getting rained on is not a bargain.

What we will tell you

If you ask us to quote double and it is a bad idea for your situation, we will say so — because we would rather ship you scheduled releases for two years than one container you discover you cannot store. Ask about committed-volume pricing on our hollow board spools and we will quote it alongside the single-drop option.
