PP Honeycomb Board for Data Centre Build-Outs

PP Honeycomb Board for Data Centre Build-Outs

A data centre build-out is the most demanding floor protection job in the commercial sector: a live or partly live facility, a raised access floor with a stated point load, an anti-static surface, and a client for whom any downtime is measured in very large numbers. Protection here is an engineering question before it is a product question.

The floor is a structure, not a finish

A raised access floor is a grid of pedestals carrying removable panels. It is designed for distributed loads; a concentrated load between pedestals is what damages it. Anything heavy moved during a build-out – a cabinet, a coil, a pallet of cable – has to be spread across at least two pedestals, and ideally four. That is a load-spreading board, and its stiffness matters more than its thickness.

Anti-static and why it is not optional

Data hall floors carry a specified surface resistance and the whole static control strategy depends on it. Laying a standard insulating cover on top defeats part of that, and in a live hall that is a real risk rather than a theoretical one. Where the floor’s dissipation has to remain effective, an anti-static grade with a stated value is the specification – and it should be measured on installation, not assumed from a datasheet.

Working in a live hall

Build-outs frequently happen in halls that are already running. That means containment rules, no debris, no trip edges and no adhesive residue on the floor tiles. Everything is laid loose and weight-friction-held, joints are tight, and the route is swept at the end of every shift. Debris under a raised floor tile is a long-term problem, not just a tidiness one.

Procurement

Data centre programmes run in phases across multiple halls over years, with the same specification each time. Set it once, hold stock, call off per phase. Consistency of batch matters for the anti-static grade, so agree that the supplier holds to one production batch per framework year.

Where standard board does the job

In the fit-out areas outside the hall – offices, plant rooms, loading areas – none of the above applies and standard board is correct and cheaper.

What to keep out of the floor void

Debris under a raised floor is a long-term problem – it affects airflow and it is very difficult to remove. Cutting board in a data hall, or letting swarf fall into an open floor void, is the kind of mistake that gets found at commissioning. Cut outside, lift tiles only where necessary, and vacuum the void before closing up.

Raised floors, ESD, and clean handling

A data centre build-out usually means working over a raised access floor with removable 600 mm tiles. The protection has to spread load across several tiles so a trolley wheel does not punch through a single one, and it has to be removable tile by tile when cabling work resumes underneath. That rules out anything adhered to the floor surface.

The second requirement is electrostatic behaviour. Standard polypropylene is an insulator and will hold a static charge, which matters once equipment is being installed. Where the work runs into the fit-out phase, an ESD-grade corrugated PP sheet is the right material for the immediate work area, with standard honeycomb panel used for the general walkways. Panels also have to be clean – no shedding, no paper labels, nothing that leaves dust in an air handling zone. The load spreading over raised floors is set out in temporary protection over raised access floors.

What we can do

We supply anti-static PP honeycomb board with a stated surface resistance, cut for raised floor grids. Tell us the pedestal grid, the floor’s stated point load and whether the hall is live, and we will specify a board that spreads over pedestals. Static behaviour in practice is discussed in what surface resistivity means in practice.
