Moving Materials Over Protected Floors Without Damage

Moving Materials Over Protected Floors Without Damage

A static load sitting on protection rarely causes problems. The damage comes from moving things: wheels turning in place, drag marks, steel on steel, and the moment someone decides a corridor is shorter if they cut across a protected area. Getting this right is mostly about routes and equipment rather than about protection thickness.

Wheel material matters

Hard narrow wheels concentrate everything into a small contact patch. Wide polyurethane or rubber wheels spread it out and are far kinder both to protection and to the floor beneath. Where heavy material handling is routine over protected floors, specifying the barrow or truck wheels is more effective than upgrading the protection.

Turning is worse than rolling

Rolling distributes load continuously. Turning scrubs the contact patch across the surface, and the twisting force at the tyre edge is what tears protection and scuffs floors.Provide turning spaces wide enough to avoid skid-steering, and where a corridor forces a turn, put a sacrificial panel over the turning zone – that one panel copes with damage that would otherwise be spread down the corridor.

Route discipline

One agreed route, physically marked, communicated at induction and maintained. The most common failure is not that the route was wrong but that it stopped being enforced after a fortnight. Where routes must cross finished areas, use sacrificial runners on top of protection so the wear happens to the cheap layer.

Dragging is the enemy

Everything dragged rather than carried leaves a trail. Toolboxes, steel sections, plasterboard sheets slid off a stack – these produce most of the long scratches seen at handover. It is a behavioural problem with an enforcement answer: carrying aids available, and a clear instruction that dragging is not permitted.

Deliveries nobody planned

The delivery that arrives when protection has been lifted for cleaning, or before it has been laid, causes disproportionate damage. Keep a protection map at the gatehouse showing which routes are currently protected and which are open, updated daily during busy periods.

Threshold and transition detail

Where protection ends and bare floor begins, edges lift and wheels catch. Every threshold needs a ramped edge or a buried transition, and those details need checking more often than the rest of the run. If you remember one thing from this article: most protection failures start at a transition, not mid-run.

Wheel types compared

Steel wheels are the worst case: narrow, very hard and unforgiving to both protection and finish. Solid rubber is better but still transmits point loads. Polyurethane tyres, particularly wide ones, spread load well and roll rather than scrub, which matters at turns. Pneumatic tyres soften impacts further but can pick up debris that then drags.

Specifying the barrow fleet is often cheaper than upgrading the protection, and has the benefit of helping every subsequent project as well. Where a project involves lots of material movement over finished floors, it belongs in the plant schedule rather than in the protection line.

Where blocks matter more than wheels

Some damage is caused by whatever lands on the protection rather than what rolls across it. Dropped steel, thrown-down toolboxes and stacked materials all concentrate load instantly. Require landing mats under stacking areas and temporary storage, because spare protection over those zones absorbs the abuse in place of the finished floor. The wider pattern is described in why protection fails in week two.

What we can do

We supply honeycomb panels suitable for sacrificial runner use over general protection, cut to corridor widths. Tell us what will be moving and on what wheels, and we will tell you where you need runners and where the general protection will cope.
