Can Corrugated Plastic Sheet Be Used Outdoors?

Can Corrugated Plastic Sheet Be Used Outdoors?

Outdoor use is the single clearest case where a resin choice matters, and it is the one most often left unspecified. Standard corrugated polypropylene sheet will survive outdoors for a while and then fail, and the failure is abrupt: the sheet looks acceptable and then cracks on the first knock.

What ultraviolet does

UV breaks the polymer chains at the surface. The visible sign is chalking – a white powdery residue you can wipe off – and it is a symptom of the surface layer having lost its strength. Underneath that, the sheet has become brittle.

The progression is slow and then sudden. Nothing appears to happen for a season, and then a sheet that was fine in September breaks in March. This is why outdoor sheet gets replaced in batches rather than as it fails.

The fix, and what it costs

UV-stabilised resin, usually a hindered amine light stabiliser package added at extrusion. It costs a small premium per sheet and extends outdoor life by a multiple rather than a margin. If the sheet is going to be outside for more than about a season, specify it.

Colour matters too. Darker and pigmented sheets generally weather better than unpigmented or white ones, because the pigment itself blocks some of the radiation. If the application allows a dark sheet, take it.

Two other outdoor factors

Wind. A large flat sheet outdoors is a sail. Fixings pull through, and the sheet tears at the fixing – which is a mechanical failure that looks like a weathering failure. Use larger washers or a fixing plate.

Open edges. Cut corrugated sheet has exposed channels. Outdoors those channels fill with water and, in a freeze, the water expands and splits the flutes. Sealed-edge sheet costs very little extra and removes it. In a climate that freezes, specify sealed edges.

How long stabilised sheet lasts

We avoid quoting a number of years, because it depends far more on the intensity of the sun where you are than on the sheet. A sheet in northern Europe and the same sheet in the Gulf are not comparable. What we will say is that the stabilised grade is worth its premium anywhere with real sun, and is a waste of money for indoor use.

Sheet used outdoors for signage and sheet used as a pallet topper have different expectations, and the honest thing is to match the grade to how long you need it to look acceptable rather than merely to survive.

How to tell when outdoor sheet is finished

Two checks. Rub a finger across the surface: if it comes away with a white powdery residue, the surface layer has broken down and the sheet has lost most of its impact strength, even if it still looks intact.

Then take a corner of the sheet and try to bend it. Sheet that has gone brittle will crack rather than flex, and it will do so with very little force. A sheet that passes the bend test is still serviceable; one that fails it will break the first time something knocks it, and is worth replacing before that happens.

What we can do

We supply PP corrugated sheet in UV-stabilised and standard grades, sealed or open edge. Tell us the application, the location and how long it needs to last, and we will specify honestly – including when the standard grade is sufficient and the premium is not worth paying.
