Fire Performance Data for PP Protection Board

Fire Performance Data for PP Protection Board

Polypropylene is a combustible thermoplastic and there is no way around that. Where protection board is used in a circulation route, a public building or anywhere an operator has standards, the fire performance has to be evidenced – and the evidence has to be for the product supplied rather than for polypropylene in general.

What is actually asked for

Usually a classification to a recognised standard, from a test on the product as supplied: thickness, face and any treatment. A supplier quoting “polypropylene is self-extinguishing” or offering a generic material statement is not answering the question, and on rail, airport and healthcare work that will be rejected.

Why thickness and face matter

Fire performance is tested on a specific construction. A thicker board behaves differently from a thin one, and a felt-faced board behaves differently from a plain one – the face is often the part that burns first. Any report has to match the board being supplied, and if the specification changes the report has to be re-checked.

Where fire-retardant grades earn their cost

In escape routes, in public buildings, and anywhere the responsible person has to sign off. A fire-retardant grade costs more and it is worth it in exactly those places. Elsewhere – a plant room, an enclosed site, an external run – standard board is usually acceptable and the premium is wasted.

What to ask for

The test standard, the classification achieved, the thickness and face it was tested on, the date, and the laboratory. Five items. If any is missing, the document will not survive a submission, and finding that out at submission stage costs weeks.

What the data does not cover

How the board is installed. A board with a good classification laid across an escape route in a way that reduces the width, or fixed with something combustible, does not perform as tested. The classification is about the material, not about the installation.

What to do when the report does not match

It happens: the report is for a 6 mm board and the site needs 10 mm, or it covers a plain face and the board has a felt one. Do not use it. Fire performance is construction-specific and a report for a different construction is not evidence. Ask for the correct one before ordering rather than after submitting – a rejected submission costs weeks.

Which test, and what the result means

Polypropylene melts. That is not a defect, it is the material, and the fire question is what happens before it melts and how fast flame spreads across the surface. The standard normally asked for on site is a surface spread of flame classification, and the report should name the standard and the classification rather than saying “fire retardant”.

Three practical points. First, a fire-retardant additive changes the panel‘s mechanical behaviour slightly and can affect colour, so specify it at order time rather than expecting the stock panel to carry it. Second, printed panels can lose their classification if the ink is not part of the tested build-up – ask whether the tested sample was printed. Third, vertical panels behave differently from horizontal ones, so a test for wall lining is not automatically valid for floor protection. Where a fire officer will review the installation, the paperwork question in fire ratings for temporary wall protection panels is worth reading alongside this.

What we can do

We supply PP honeycomb protection board in standard and fire-retardant grades and provide the test report for the specific construction supplied. Tell us where it is going and who has to approve it, and we will send the documentation with the quote rather than after it. Wall and panel fire questions are covered in fire ratings for temporary wall protection panels.
