Sample Packs and Trial Orders for Protection Board

Sample Packs and Trial Orders for Protection Board

Buyers usually skip sampling on protection board because it is a commodity purchase, and that is exactly when things go wrong. Two products with the same thickness and the same name behave completely differently on a floor, and the difference is visible in thirty seconds with a sample in hand.

What a sample shows

Three things that no datasheet conveys. The face: whether the fibrous side is a needled industrial felt or a lightweight decorative fleece, which determines how much grit it holds. The stiffness: pick the board up by one corner and see whether it stays flat. And the edge: whether it is sealed, and how well the skin is bonded to the core.

What a trial order shows

Whether it survives the site. Put a small quantity down in the worst area for two weeks and lift it. If the face has worn through, the board is too light. If the edges have opened, they were not sealed well enough. If it has curled, the faces are unbalanced. All three are visible after a fortnight and none are visible in a sample.

How much to trial

Enough to cover one complete route or one room, not a token couple of sheets. A trial that is too small gives no information about joints, about handling or about how it wears in the traffic lane – and those are the things a trial is for.

What it costs

Samples are usually free and a trial order is usually charged at the standard rate. Against a five-figure protection order, or against a floor repair that costs more, neither is a real cost. Where a supplier charges for samples on a bulk enquiry, that is worth noting.

When to skip it

When the same board has been used before on the same kind of floor by the same team. Repeat orders do not need re-sampling, and standardising the specification across a programme is partly about not having to do this twice.

Testing a sample properly

Three checks that take two minutes. Run a fingernail across the fibrous face – a needled felt resists and sounds dull, a decorative fleece does not. Pick the board up by one corner – a balanced board stays flat, an unbalanced one twists. And look at the edge – welded, trimmed or open. Those three tell you more about the board than any datasheet, and they are the same checks listed in what to check before buying honeycomb panels.

How to test a sample properly

A sample panel sitting on a desk tells you nothing. Put it where the work will happen and abuse it for a week: wheel a loaded trolley across it, leave a wet boot on it overnight, drop a spanner on it, then lift it and look at the floor underneath. That last check is the one that matters and the one people forget.

Ask for a sample that includes a cut edge as well as a factory edge, so you can see whether the sealing survives handling. Ask for the two faces so you can compare grip. And ask for the same grade you would actually be buying – a virgin polymer sample sent against a regrind quotation is a common mismatch. A trial order of ten or twenty panels on a real area beats any number of samples, and we usually recommend it for programmes longer than three months. The pre-purchase check list is in what to check before buying honeycomb panels.

What we can do

We send samples of PP honeycomb protection board on request and will supply a trial quantity at standard pricing. Tell us the floor and the traffic, and we will send the grade we think suits it plus the one either side, so you can compare rather than take our word for it.

Engineering reusable PP packaging for global industry

Rulowin supplies precision-engineered, reusable PP packaging - honeycomb panels, corrugated sheet, crates, boxes and reels - for automotive, optical fibre, electronics and industrial supply chains.
