Coarse Dust Loading in HVAC Systems

Coarse Dust Loading in HVAC Systems

In most building air, the bulk of the mass is in the coarse fraction – lint, fibre, hair, skin flakes, the larger agglomerates that settle on surfaces. Fine particles matter more for health and are far less of the mass. That difference is what makes staged filtration work, and it is why a coarse stage is worth specifying properly rather than treating as an afterthought.

Where the mass comes from

Occupancy, mostly. Textiles shed fibre continuously; people shed hair and skin; shoes carry in grit that gets resuspended. Then the building itself – ceiling voids, insulation, anything that degrades and becomes airborne. And in industrial settings, whatever the process generates.

Construction is the outlier worth planning for. Drilling, cutting and sanding inside an occupied building raises coarse loading by a large multiple for weeks, and a filter schedule set for normal conditions will be overwhelmed during it.

What a washable stage changes

Where the coarse fraction is heavy, the coarse stage loads fast. A disposable panel in that position is changed often, which is a purchase, a disposal and a task every time. A washable screen converts all three into a wash, and returns to a known clean condition rather than a nominal new one.

The other change is that resistance stays lower across the interval, because an open structure does not fill the way a mat does. Over a year of continuous operation that is the larger part of the saving.

What to watch

Two things. Bypass at the frame, which shows up as dust on surfaces downstream of a filter that looks fine – and which is more common with rigid panels that need a sealing arrangement. And greasy loading, which does not wash out and will end a washable screen prematurely in the wrong environment.

Construction and refurbishment periods

Coarse loading during building work is not a version of normal loading; it is a different regime. Drilling, cutting and sanding produce material in quantities that can load a coarse stage in days, and the particle size distribution is different too – more coarse, more abrasive.

Plan for it rather than discovering it. Where works are known in advance, either increase the service frequency for the duration or accept that the coarse stage is consumable during the works and budget for it. Where they are not known in advance, a pressure gauge is what tells you – a reading that doubles in a week is not a mystery.

Checking whether the coarse stage is working

Look at what is downstream. If the coil face or the fine stage is visibly clean at the end of an interval, the coarse stage is doing its job. If the fine stage is loaded with coarse material, the coarse stage is either bypassing, undersized, or specified finer or coarser than the situation needs.

It is a simple check and it is rarely done, because it means opening the plant at a point nobody usually looks. It is also the check that distinguishes a media problem from a fitting problem, which is the distinction that matters.

What we can do

We supply reusable dust filter screens for HVAC duty, cut to frame or aperture, with the clean and loaded pressure drop quoted for your face velocity. Tell us the airflow, the face area and what the building does, and we will tell you what to expect from a washable stage here.
