Protecting Plasterboard Corners Before Handover

Protecting Plasterboard Corners Before Handover

Walk any snagging list and external corners dominate. They take impacts from everything that moves through a corridor, they are slow to repair properly, and a patched corner rarely disappears completely. Protection for the last few weeks of a programme is among the cheapest defect-prevention money on a job.

Why corners take the hits

An external angle has no redundancy. The board edge is thin, the bead relies on the skim for support, and any impact transfers directly into it rather than being spread across a face. Add wheeled access and materials being turned in a corridor, which is exactly where most external corners are, and damage becomes close to inevitable without protection.

What counts as damaged

Agree the standard early. A scuff that needs filling and a crushed bead that needs cutting out and replacing are different defects with different costs, and whether either is acceptable depends on what the client will walk past daily. Fine decorative finishes get held to a much higher standard than a back-of-house corridor, so protection specification should vary by area rather than being uniform.

Changing from guarding everything

Full-height corner protection is standard but often more than needed. In practice most impacts land between roughly 300 mm and 1.2 m from the floor – trolley, bumper and equipment heights. Guarding that band with a cut panel deals with nearly all of it, uses less material and is less intrusive in occupied areas. Full-height protection suits areas with continuous handling at varying heights, such as loading corridors.

Fixing without causing damage

Corner protection fixed with aggressive adhesive can take the skim off with it on removal, which converts a protected corner into a damaged one. Removable tape systems and mechanical fixings into the stud either side are safer on finished plasterwork. If you must use adhesive, test it on an offcut area first and record what happened.

Install it early enough

The usual timing mistake is installing protection after decoration and before handover, which leaves the period when most damage actually happens – mechanical fix, second fix and snagging walks – unprotected. Plan protection from the point the beads go on, not the point the paint goes on. The approach described in keeping a reference for repeat orders applies here too: record what worked so the next phase repeats it.

Removal at practical completion

Take it down after the final clean but before the client walk, and patch as you go. Corners always look worse with the guard half off, and a walk conducted with protection still in place tends to generate a second snagging list once it comes down.

What repairing a corner actually involves

A light scuff is a fill and a sand. A crushed bead is a different job: cut out the damaged section, replace the bead, skim, let it dry, sand, mist coat and paint the full return – because a patch limited to one side always shows. On decorated circulation space that is several visits and a drying period, which is why prevention is worth so much more than the protection costs.

That reality is the argument to use with whoever is resisting the protection line: not that corners might be damaged, but that repairing one means touching decoration on two faces of every affected return, usually during the busiest week of the project.

What we can do

We fabricate PP honeycomb panels into corner guards, returns and full-height angles, cut to the heights you need. Tell us the corridor use and whether the areas are occupied, and we will suggest where guarding pays and where a simple sacrificial strip will do.

Engineering reusable PP packaging for global industry

Rulowin supplies precision-engineered, reusable PP packaging - honeycomb panels, corrugated sheet, crates, boxes and reels - for automotive, optical fibre, electronics and industrial supply chains.
