Fire Performance of PP Honeycomb Panels: What the Grades Mean

Fire Performance of PP Honeycomb Panels: What the Grades Mean

Standard polypropylene is a combustible material. That is a fact about the polymer and it does not go away with an additive. What a fire-retardant grade changes is how the material behaves once ignited: how fast flame spreads across it, whether it drips, and whether it self-extinguishes when the ignition source is removed.

What the additive actually does

Fire-retardant packages work by interrupting the combustion chemistry, usually by forming a char layer or by releasing species that quench the flame radicals. In practice this buys time rather than immunity. A treated panel still ignites; it spreads more slowly and may stop burning once the flame source is gone.

The practical consequence is that fire-retardant board belongs in the same conversation as other passive measures – it is a contributor to fire safety, not a substitute for detection, suppression or escape planning.

Why the label is not enough

“Fire retardant” on its own is not a specification. What matters is which test method the material was assessed against and what result it achieved. Different tests measure genuinely different things: some assess flame spread across a horizontal surface, others a vertical one, others the tendency to drip, and others the heat release rate.

A material that performs well on one of these can perform poorly on another. So the useful question for a supplier is not “is it fire retardant” but “which method, and what was the result”.

Getting the requirement from the right place

The requirement should come from your site’s fire risk assessment and from any building or insurance conditions that apply – not from a supplier’s catalogue. This is the point where most projects go wrong: someone specifies a fire-retardant panel because it sounds safer, and nobody checks whether it satisfies the actual requirement.

If your insurer, your building control process or a customer audit imposes a condition, get it in writing and pass that wording on. It is far easier to build to a stated condition than to guess.

What changes in the panel

  • Cost and availability – the additive package is expensive and not every grade is stocked.
  • Colour options narrow considerably; many formulations are only available in a limited palette.
  • Mechanical properties can shift slightly. Some formulations trade a little impact resistance for fire performance.
  • Welding and bonding parameters may need adjusting, and some adhesives behave differently on a treated surface.
  • End-of-life routes may be narrower, because additive-containing material is less welcome in some recycling streams.

Where it matters most

Enclosed spaces, escape routes, public buildings, tunnels, and anywhere a large quantity of board is installed together. Where a single panel sits in an open industrial bay with good separation, the marginal benefit is smaller and the cost is easier to justify on other grounds.

A note on smoke

Smoke is often the more important hazard and it is measured separately. A formulation that reduces flame spread does not automatically reduce smoke production, and in some chemistries the two move in opposite directions. If the space is enclosed or people need to leave through it, ask specifically about smoke performance rather than assuming it follows from the flame result.

What we can do

We supply PP honeycomb panels in standard grades and can source fire-retardant formulations. Tell us the requirement as it is written in your risk assessment or specification – we will tell you whether it can be met and what it does to cost, colour and lead time. If it cannot be met with PP, saying so early is cheaper than discovering it at installation.

Engineering reusable PP packaging for global industry

Rulowin supplies precision-engineered, reusable PP packaging - honeycomb panels, corrugated sheet, crates, boxes and reels - for automotive, optical fibre, electronics and industrial supply chains.
