Why PP Honeycomb Outperforms MDF and Foam Board

Exhibition stands traditionally rely on medium-density fibreboard, PVC foam, and corrugated cardboard, each usually discarded after a single event. Rulowin PP honeycomb boards offer a rigid, lightweight alternative with a typical panel weight of 3.8 kg/m2 at 10 mm thickness, roughly 60 percent lighter than an equivalent MDF panel. That weight difference directly reduces booth freight costs and the physical strain on setup crews.

The closed-cell polypropylene skin also resists the scuffs, beverage spills, and adhesive residue that accumulate during a three-day trade show. A board that survives its first event intact can be redeployed for the next, eliminating the recurring purchase of disposable graphics substrates.

Structural Properties That Matter on the Show Floor

PP honeycomb uses a polypropylene cell core sandwiched between two flat PP skins, producing a high stiffness-to-weight ratio. A 10 mm panel spans 600 mm between supports with negligible deflection under a 15 kg point load, sufficient for suspended signage and product display shelves. Edge profiles can be capped with extruded PP U-channels to hide the core and create a clean, finished border.

Because the material is impervious to water, outdoor exhibit elements and cafe-adjacent displays perform without warping. Print houses apply direct UV ink or mount self-adhesive vinyl, both of which bond well to the corona-treated PP surface.

Reusability Across Multiple Events

A documented Rulowin pilot with a German industrial client tracked 14 reuse cycles over 22 months with no loss of flatness. Between events, panels are wiped with a mild detergent, inspected for edge damage, and stored flat in the original returnable frame. The client retired roughly 1.1 tonnes of foam-board waste per year.

For multi-city roadshows, the same board set travels in a reusable PP pallet-sleeve-box/" class="rw-inlink">sleeve, cutting crating volume by about 35 percent compared with padded cardboard cartons.

Design and Finishing Options

Standard sheet sizes are 1220 mm by 2440 mm, and boards cut cleanly with a circular saw or CNC router. Common finishes include matte white for backlit graphics, brushed silver for a technical aesthetic, and printed brand colour laminates. Integrated living hinges let a single board fold into a freestanding A-frame, reducing part count.

When the board finally reaches end of life, the mono-material PP stream is fully recyclable, closing the loop that disposable foam board never could.

A UK events agency built a 6 m display wall from 18 honeycomb panels and reused it across 9 shows in a year, avoiding roughly 540 m2 of printed foam board that would otherwise have been landfilled.

Procurement teams should request the fire-rated grade for indoor venues that enforce EN 13501 classification, and confirm the skin colour matches the brand palette before lamination. Storing boards vertically in the returnable frame between events prevents edge compression and keeps them flat for the next graphic mount.
