Hire Fleet Versus Owned Protection Panels

Hire Fleet Versus Owned Protection Panels

Contractors usually default to buying protection, then store it badly and buy again next year. Specialist hire fleets exist because somebody worked out that utilisation, storage and cleaning – not purchase price – decide which is cheaper.

Utilisation is the whole calculation

A panel used 40 weeks a year carries its cost over 40 weeks. The same panel used six weeks and stored in a yard carries it over six. Divide purchase price by utilisation weeks and add storage, handling and cleaning, and you have a weekly cost that can be compared directly against a hire rate. Panels below roughly twelve working weeks a year are usually cheaper hired.

What storage actually costs

Owned protection sits somewhere. Yard space has a rent, panels stored outdoors degrade faster from UV exposure, and moving them to and from site costs labour and transport each time. Then there is the counting: an unmanaged store becomes a pile where damaged and serviceable panels mix, and the next job starts with a guess rather than a number.

Cleaning and repair

Hire fleets clean and repair because their margin depends on cycles. An owned fleet has to do the same work, usually without a process or a place to do it, and if it does not happen the panels get progressively worse and eventually get skipped. Add the labour honestly – it is real cost whether or not anyone records it.

Specification flexibility

Hire fleets carry what they carry. If your projects need a particular thickness, edge detail or fire classification, owning specific stock may be the only way to guarantee it is available when you need it. Availability certainty is a genuine reason to buy that has nothing to do with price.

Cash and accounting

Hire is operating cost; purchase may be capitalised depending on value and policy. Some contractors prefer hire simply because it moves cost off the balance sheet and onto the project, where it can be recovered against the contract. That is a legitimate commercial reason and often the deciding one.

The hybrid that usually wins

Most established contractors end up owning a base quantity for standard internal areas and hiring specialist items – fire-rated boards, heavy-duty matting, very thick panels – for the minority of jobs that need them. That keeps utilisation high on what you own and avoids paying to store what you rarely use.

Accounting treatment changes the answer

Whether purchased panels are capitalised or expensed alters which option looks cheaper on paper, and finance policies differ between contractors entirely for legitimate reasons. Ask your own finance team how they will treat it before running the comparison, because the answer occasionally reverses the recommendation without anything operational changing.

The other effect worth noting is where cost lands. Hire puts cost into the project, where it is usually recoverable against the contract; purchase can leave depreciation sitting centrally where nobody was expecting it. Neither is wrong – the point is knowing which is going to happen before it does. The monthly comparison in cost per square metre per month is the one that decides it.

What we can do

We supply protection panels for purchase and can build a package sized to a realistic utilisation rather than a theoretical one. Tell us how many weeks a year they would actually be on the floor and where they would be stored, and we will tell you honestly whether buying makes sense in your case.
