Blast Freezing Lines and What Crates Endure

Blast Freezing Lines and What Crates Endure

Ambient to minus thirty in under an hour, every day, with air moving fast enough to dry anything exposed. Blast freezing is where normally reliable crates crack, and it is rarely because the polymer cannot take the temperature – the mechanism is set out in whether PP crates go brittle in long-term cold storage, and what follows here is about the cycling rather than the cold.

The cycling is the problem, not the cold

Polypropylene becomes stiffer and less impact tolerant as it gets colder, and the transition happens quickly in a blast freezer. Material that would absorb a knock at ambient becomes brittle enough to crack at the bottom of the curve. Every trip through adds one more cycle, so failures accumulate in crates that look undamaged.

This is why crates that survive two years of chilled use fail in months once the same product goes through a blast line.

Air velocity dries and abrades

High velocity air desiccates product and, incidentally, removes moisture from surfaces including any absorbed water in the board or trapped in hollow sections. Trapped water that freezes expands, and repeated expansion opens up joints and delaminated edges. Sealed sections and good drainage are worth more here than thickness.

Wet loading multiplies it

Product loaded wet freezes to itself and to the crate. Release becomes a mechanical event – people lever product out, and the lever point is where the crate breaks. Rapid freezing of surface moisture is normal; freezing the crate solid to its contents is a drainage failure.

Handling cold is the dangerous moment

The drop-off arrives when crates are handled at their coldest: unloading, de-nesting, stacking immediately out of the freezer. That is when impact resistance is lowest and impacts are most likely. Specifications that quote ambient impact figures tell you nothing about this moment.

Tempering – letting crates come back toward ambient before rough handling – removes most of it, and costs nothing except scheduling.

Design points that matter

Rounded internal corners rather than sharp ones, no thin unsupported ribs in the cold zone, generous radii at any stress concentration, and no metal components, because differential contraction between metal and polymer creates exactly the cracking. Any joint that combines materials should be treated as suspect in this duty.

Check the grade

Not every polypropylene formulation behaves the same at low temperature, and impact modifier packages make a real difference. Ask for impact data at your actual minimum temperature rather than at ambient, and be sceptical of any supplier who cannot produce it, including us – if we cannot, that itself is information.

What to check and when

Inspect freezer-duty crates on a schedule rather than waiting for failures: monthly look for new hairline cracks at handle roots, corner radii and drill points, and flex each crate enough to open any crack that is developing. Flexing reveals cracks that are invisible at rest, and it takes seconds per unit.

Record retirements with a reason. After six months the pattern is usually clear – either a handling location, a specific shift, or a batch – and that single piece of information is what turns a replacement cost into a fixable problem.

What we can do

We supply returnable crates for freezing duty and can specify impact-modified grades where the cycle warrants it. Send your set point, pull-down time and how the crates are handled on the way out, and we will recommend a construction – or tell you when a heavier moulded crate is the safer buy.
