Freight density is the mass of a shipment divided by the volume it occupies, expressed in kg per cubic metre. Carriers use it to decide whether a load is charged by weight or by space. Lock the standard in a packaging specification document and enforce it at incoming inspection. Review the standard annually as product mix shifts.
