Virgin PP offers the highest tensile strength and impact resistance of the two options, which is why it is the default for demanding structural parts in a returnable container. Post-consumer recycled PP, or rPP, typically runs 10 to 20 percent lower on impact at minus 20 Celsius where brittle failure begins and a dropped box on a winter dock would crack if it were made only of the recycled material without reinforcement from a virgin zone.
Rulowin blends rPP at 30 to 70 percent for non-critical shells, reserving virgin copolymer for hinge and base zones that bear cyclic stress, which captures most of the environmental benefit without putting the load-bearing parts at risk of early fatigue in the cold. The blend is tuned per application, so a warm indoor loop can carry more rPP than a frozen-food lane that sees hard impacts at low temperature during the shift at the plant.
Consistency and Color Control
Recycled stream varies by batch, so rPP parts need tighter incoming QC than virgin resin from a single supplier with a stable process. We spec a melt flow index window of plus or minus 2 g per 10 minutes and sort by color to keep a uniform grey or black that the customer’s branding can accept without a visible patchwork of shades across the fleet of totes in the loop.
Virgin grades give tighter tolerances for tight-fit lids and dividers where a fraction of a millimeter determines whether a snap closes cleanly on the line without rework by the operator. That consistency is why lids and clips stay virgin even when the body of the tote is a blend, because the fit of the closure is the part the user notices most when the box is opened and closed dozens of times a day on the floor.

When to Specify Each
Use rPP where the container sees mild duty and indoor return, and virgin where fold hinges or cold chains are involved in the duty cycle that the box must survive without cracking. A blended strategy cuts fleet carbon 35 percent while protecting the parts that matter most, which is the pragmatic compromise that satisfies both the sustainability team and the engineering team without either side having to concede the core of their requirement on the spec sheet for the program.
The blend also future-proofs the fleet against tightening recycled-content mandates that regulators are introducing in several markets, because the design already accommodates rPP and only needs the ratio adjusted upward as the supply of certified post-consumer resin improves in quality and availability from the recyclers who feed the compounders that we buy from for the material.
